Multi-millionaire David Maxwell recently purchased Ain’t That A Shame with the intention of racing in the £1million Aintree feature on Saturday. The 45-year-old had been searching for a horse to ride in the National, and after acquiring the gelding, he faced criticism for his riding style.
Despite being considered a 33/1 long shot, Ain’t That A Shame, a recent winner at Gowran Park in Ireland, finished in sixth place in the renowned race, proving many of his critics wrong. Under the guidance of trainer Henry de Bromhead, Maxwell earned £30,000 for his impressive debut result in front of the 80,000-strong crowd.
This successful outcome validated his decision to purchase the horse and participate in the race. Maxwell expressed satisfaction with Ain’t That A Shame’s performance and credited the horse as being a safe jumper, while acknowledging his concern about the horse’s strength.
For Maxwell, taking part in the National fulfilled a “lifetime ambition,” and he remained focused on staying calm leading up to the race. He noted that he would approach the event with a mindset similar to the Foxhunters, aiming to remain composed while navigating the course.
