Leverkusen clinched their first-ever German top flight title on Sunday with a 5-0 win against Werder Bremen. The BayArena was filled with wild celebrations as thousands of fans stormed the pitch and red smoke filled the air. Among the celebrants was Fosu-Mensah, 26, who joined the club in 2021 from United.
The defender, who previously made 30 senior appearances for Manchester United, shared a clip on Instagram standing next to Wirtz, who was holding aloft the Bundesliga trophy amid jubilant supporters. However, Fosu-Mensah will not qualify for a winners’ medal as he didn’t play a single minute of league football this season. Only players who have featured in five or more matches are eligible to receive a winners’ medal in Germany.
Fosu-Mensah’s lack of playing time makes his celebrations bittersweet, having joined United’s academy from Ajax as a teenager in 2014. Nevertheless, Leverkusen’s victory will be a cause for great celebration, having gone unbeaten in 29 league matches and sitting 16 points ahead of long-standing champions Bayern Munich. The historic win has provided Leverkusen with the opportunity to vie for a historic Treble, with DFB-Pokal and Europa League winners’ medals still in contention.
This achievement offers a chance for the club to silence those who have taunted them over the years.
