The home side had an instant response with Sammie Szmodics scoring his 31st goal of the season in all competitions just three minutes later. Wednesday took the lead once again through Marvin Johnson in the second half, securing three points to move them out of the relegation zone. With Blackburn hoping to equalize, things took a horrible turn for John Eustace’s side six minutes after Wednesday’s second goal of the game.
Rovers defender Dominic Hyam made a seemingly innocent back pass to Pears, the goalkeeper, but a horrendous blunder led to the away side’s third goal. The ball traveled to Pears at a slow speed with no pressure from attackers, but he made a comical gaffe as he attempted to clear it, resulting in an embarrassing own goal. Fans immediately recognized the similarities of Pears’ blunder to Peter Enckelman’s famous goalkeeping error in 2002.
