The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is offering a reward of £16,000 for information on the individual responsible for fatally shooting a dolphin. The dolphin was brought to the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans by Audubon Aquarium Rescue, a partner of NOAA’s stranding network.
A necropsy revealed that the dolphin had been shot multiple times in the brain, spinal cord, and heart. The Marine Protection Act prohibits the harassment, harm, killing, or feeding of wild dolphins, and violators could face fines of up to £80,000 or imprisonment.
There have been comments speculating about dolphins in the Thames, some suggesting that they are seeking to escape the pollution. Others have made lighter-hearted remarks, playing on the word “porpoise” and joking about their living arrangements.
