Desislava Bozhilova: The Firm Snooker Referee at The Crucible, According to the Daily Star

Desislava Bozhilova has a no-nonsense approach to snooker and is known for keeping order at The Crucible. Born in Bulgaria in 1992, she discovered her love for snooker at 13. Although she did not succeed as a professional player, she joined the Bulgarian Snooker Referees Association while studying in Sofia.

Her officiating career began in 2012, which she considers a career highlight. Over the past decade, Desislava has built a reputation for her no-nonsense style, even reprimanding BBC commentators for being too loud. During the 2022 World Championships, while officiating Judd Trump and Mark Williams’ semi-final clash, Desislava had to quiet down the host broadcaster’s studio.

Despite her stern demeanor, fans also saw her lighter side when Williams tried to distract her by dropping his cue, causing her to fight back laughter as she rearranged the balls. In the 2024 tournament, Desislava had a tense exchange with Ronnie O’Sullivan during his quarter-final with Stuart Bingham. The black ball was obstructing O’Sullivan’s shot, leading to a prolonged debate and attempts to resolve the issue.

Ultimately, O’Sullivan graciously opted for a safe play, allowing Bingham to win the frame.
