Martinez’s injury nightmare over the past 12 months looks to have continued after he limped off with a knee problem in the second half. The Argentine was left clutching his knee in obvious discomfort after Vladimir Coufal landed on his leg as he shepherded the ball behind for a goal-kick.
The defender was tended to by United’s medical team but he attempted to play on; however, it became evident he couldn’t continue and went down a second time, hiding his face in the turf. He was replaced by Raphael Varane in the 71st minute and headed straight down the tunnel past the United fans who serenaded him.
Erik ten Hag will be left fearing the full diagnosis of Martinez’s latest setback, saying after the game: “It seems bad. We have to wait, make the right diagnosis in the coming days and then we will see.
Hopefully it is not too bad, we can only pray. The hosts did survive a number of chances by West Ham but nerves were eased just four minutes after half-time when Alejandro Garnacho made it 2-0.
Garnacho later wrapped the game up in the 84th minute as he fired low past Lukasz Fabianski, who had replaced Alphonse Areola at half-time, to secure the points. United have now leapfrogged West Ham in the table into 6th place.
