Football pundit fired for racist “joke” directed at Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal – Daily Star

Spanish television network Movistar Plus+ recently terminated the contract of German Burgos following a controversial comment he made during a live broadcast. The incident occurred despite Burgos’ team’s victory and his own impressive performance. The comment, which inquired about the U18s’ best player and mentioned Lamine Yamal, led to his dismissal.

Burgos, previously Diego Simeone’s assistant manager at Atletico, issued an apology emphasizing that his words were not intended to be racist, although Movistar Plus+ proceeded with his termination and announced measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. In his Instagram statement, translated from Spanish, Burgos expressed regret and emphasized his admiration for young academy players, particularly those from Barca. He acknowledged his excitement for the emerging talents in the sport and reiterated that he did not intend to disparage Lamine Yamal.

He further highlighted the unifying aspect of football, asserting that it transcends barriers of sex, race, religion, disability, age, and sexual orientation. The network’s decision to end their collaboration with Burgos and his subsequent statement reflect a contentious and regrettable situation. Despite his long history in football and dedication to nurturing young talents, the impact of his words led to this outcome, reminding everyone of the sensitivity and responsibility that comes with being in the public eye.
