The evening was going smoothly until a moment just before the break when Vitaliy Mykolenko suffered a freak injury while trying to prevent Darwin Nunez from reaching the ball in his own box. Mykolenko landed awkwardly, causing serious discomfort and requiring treatment from Everton’s physios. The replay footage showed his ankle bent completely the wrong way, prompting Sean Dyche to replace the left-back with veteran Ashley Young as Everton came out for the second 45 minutes.
