The Spanish racing legends regularly clashed on and off the track during their years as rivals in motorbike racing’s premier class. On one occasion, after the Spanish Grand Prix in 2008, the King of Spain even intervened in their feud, with Monarch encouraging them to shake hands on the podium.
The pair are now firm friends, but could still meet in the ring after Pedrosa, 38, posted a video which showed him appearing to confirm a charity boxing match versus Lorenzo, 36. Alongside the video, he wrote, with boxing glove emojis either side, “99 VS 26 [their race numbers].” Lorenzo replied: “You’re brave @26_danipedrosa.
I’m still training and I’ll see you in the ring.”
Pedrosa was pressed on the potential for a dust-up between the MotoGP icons ahead of his wildcard appearance for KTM at this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez. *Would you like to see Pedrosa and Lorenzo go at it in the ring?
I have to chat with him to see how we define the match,” he said. “It was his idea.
I don’t even know how much time I have to train. But once we have a date, we’ll plan a training regime and the terms [rules] of the fight.”
While Pedrosa, a KTM test rider, still races occasionally, three-time MotoGP world champion Lorenzo announced his bike racing retirement in 2019.
A permanent comeback with Ducati in 2021 failed to materialize while he has tried his hand at car racing, competing in the Porsche Supercup in Italy.
