Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have acquired a minority stake in Mexican side Club Necaxa. The Hollywood stars recently oversaw their second consecutive promotion at the Racecourse Ground, and are now aiming to replicate that success with Necaxa, who currently sit at the bottom of Liga Mexico. Notably, this is not the first time celebrities have invested in the club, with Mexican American actress Eva Longoria, Baseball star Justin Verlander, NFL star Odell Beckham Jr, and model Kate Upton already being existing investors.
This move comes on the heels of the on-field and television success enjoyed by Wrexham under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney. Fans in Mexico are hopeful that their influence will bring similar heights of achievement to Necaxa. Moreover, Reynolds, Longoria, and McElhenney all have production companies that might become involved in producing a series about the club, which airs on FX in the United States and Disney+ in the UK.
Despite being more than a century old, Necaxa has a reported net worth of around $200 million, attributed to the investment from Americans Al Tylis and Sam Porter, who acquired 50% of the franchise from the Tinajero family. Additionally, it is noteworthy that despite currently being at the bottom of the league, there is no threat of relegation as Liga MX has suspended promotion and relegation for a five-year period, starting in 2020.
