The legendary Scot was known for a temper to match his incredible ability as a manager and a burning desire to win. Something which led to the infamous half-time hairdryer treatment being coined, but apparently attempting to hang players up was certainly an intriguing approach. Progressing his way through the youth ranks, Tonge played with the first-team during friendly games and was called up to the senior ranks on occasion.
What do you make of Alan Tonge’s comments? After just three years at Exeter, the Bury-born defender was forced to retire due to a serious back issue. Following the end of his playing days, Tonge gained a BSc degree in Sports Science from the University of Bolton, later completing a master’s degree in philosophy and a PhD at Liverpool John Moores University.
He now lectures at the University Campus of Football Business in Manchester.
