Athletic Bilbao celebrates cup victory with wild boat parade as fans wonder, “can we do this?” – Daily Star

The city of Bilbao celebrated a historic moment as their football team claimed their first honour in almost 50 years. The celebration took place on April 11 and drew hundreds of thousands of supporters to the banks of Bilbao’s River Nervion to witness the event.

Traditionally, Bilbao celebrates major titles by parading the club’s famous barge, La Gabarra, which hadn’t been done since 1984. The club confirmed that the celebration would indeed take place, marking the end of a 40-year wait and six consecutive lost finals.

The long-awaited victory was especially significant for the club, which had endured six consecutive Spanish cup final defeats and a loss in the Europa League final to Atletico Madrid in 2012. Bilbao’s manager, Ernesto Valverde, expressed his personal connection to the triumph, having played for the club and managed the team in his third stint.

He acknowledged the special significance of the Copa del Rey victory, emphasizing the years of effort and the cup’s importance to Athletic Bilbao. In addition to the football success, the club also offers its community members various perks such as competitions, special offers, promotions, and adverts.
