Ex-Chelsea Player Nearly Went Blind Before Emergency Operation Saved Sight – Daily Star

Former Sweden international, Magnus Hedman, rejoined Chelsea in November 2006 due to injuries to the team’s first and second choice goalkeepers, Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini. Despite returning, Hedman did not make an appearance and left the club at the end of the season. However, he recently faced a health scare when doctors discovered he had a detached retina, but he underwent emergency surgery and is now safe from going blind in one eye. After retiring from professional football, Hedman struggled with drug addiction and contemplated suicide before making a recovery.

He now works as a mind coach in Sweden. He spent the majority of his playing career at AIK in Sweden and also had a spell at Coventry City, followed by three seasons at Celtic. The injuries to Chelsea’s goalkeepers, Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini, were notable during a match against Reading, with Cech sustaining a serious head injury and Cudicini being knocked unconscious in the same game. This left Chelsea with only one senior goalkeeper, Henrique Hilario, and resulted in John Terry being forced to play as goalkeeper for part of the game.

Cech suffered a fractured skull from the incident and had to wear a headguard for the rest of his career, while Cudicini and Cech both missed extended periods of action due to their injuries.
