Ivory Coast clinches AFCON title with stunning Haller goal, despite manager sacking mid-tournament.

The tournament hosts just managed to advance to the next stage after losing two of their first three games. This progression was due to them being the final best third-placed team. After this, their head coach was replaced, and they went on to win against Senegal on penalties, beat Mali after extra time, and defeat DR Congo to reach the final against Nigeria, whom they beat 2-1.

In the final match, Franck Kessie equalised for the Ivory Coast after Nigeria took an early lead. Despite having lost to Nigeria in the group stage, the Ivory Coast secured victory to claim their third AFCON title, with Max Gradel contributing a significant bicycle kick. The match saw few opportunities for Nigeria, with the Super Eagles taking an unlikely lead thanks to an ex-Watford defender’s looping header.

Despite a brief scare for Nigeria, they managed to survive the Ivorian attacks and secure their lead. However, the Ivory Coast continued to press, with Haller eventually scoring the winning goal in the 81st minute. The hosts held on to their lead for the remainder of the game, ultimately securing a well-deserved victory in the final.
