The 23-year-old winger crowd surfed on top of hundreds of jubilant Pompey fans after the South Coast side secured a place in the Championship next season with a 3-2 home victory over Barnsley. After the match, John Mousinho’s players took to a local bar and partied the night away in raucous fashion. Before the hangover had fully sit in, Lane was summoned for an interview with BBC Radio Solent – let’s just say, he was less than 100% when he picked up the phone. Lane, 23, punctuated every sentence with a high-pitch, childlike giggle, to the delight of fans who could not stop themselves from smiling.
Every time he tried to recall his media training during the phone call, the giggles set back in, leaving him and the interviewer in hysterics. “Fair play to him, he’s just won a title and he’s young. He’s got 72 hrs to recover and quaff water like he’s a camel,” one fan laughed, while also reminding fans Portsmouth have to play Wigan Athletic on the weekend. Portsmouth are hoping to finish the season as champions.
After the match, he was part of the boozy celebrations in Portsmouth which saw members of the team whip out their tops and, in Joe Rafferty’s case, get his backside out.
