Real Madrid Predicted Bernardo Silva’s ‘Worst Penalty Ever’ and Took a ‘Risk’: Daily Star

The second-leg tie at the Etihad Stadium ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of play, before Los Blancos’ Andriy Lunin heroically saved two penalties in the shootout, which ended 4-3. One of City’s two missed penalties was Silva’s dreadful effort, which floated straight into Lunin’s hands in the centre of the goal.

The City playmaker had hoped the Ukrainian would dive to one side – but was left with egg on his face as fans dubbed it one of the “worst of all time”. “That Bernardo Silva penalty needs to be added to Man City’s 115 charges,” one X user trolled, while another tweeted: “I’ve watched Bernardo Silva’s penalty miss almost 115 times and it keeps getting funnier.” A third fumed: “Bernardo Silva with the worst penalty of all time man wtf was he thinking,” while a fourth pointed out: “The worst penalty in the history of man.”

Others chimed in with: “That penalty kick has got to be the stinkiest one you’ll ever see,” and: “That is literally the worst penalty I’ve ever seen.

Lunin, who was not to make the same mistake, stood tall to make the effort look considerably worse than it could have been. The shot-stopper later revealed the decision to stay put was taken even before the shootout.

“It’s an away Champions League game and we went through a lot of suffering… but I’m very grateful to the team for everything they’ve fought for. Defender Antonio Rudiger had pointed in the direction which he thought Kovacic would go, getting it right as the Croatian was denied.

Rudiger went on to score the winning spot-kick himself with Madrid’s fifth penalty, which clipped the inside of the post on its way in.
