According to David Gill, who once served as chief executive at the Red Devils, Wenger kept moving the goalposts for the move. Gill revealed that Wenger knew he was fighting a losing a battle when he finally relinquished the striker to United.
“The player wanted to come, and his agent [played ball], that was all okay. But Arsene [Wenger] clearly knew what he was losing.
And now they get on well, but at the time, he had a difficult relationship with Alex. But in the end, we got it over the line.
Alex spoke with Arsene, and [made] a little tweak at the end to give them [Arsenal] a bit more. It was difficult, but that’s the game.
