Mike Perry defeated Thiago Alves in the first round at the BKFC KnuckleMania 4 in Los Angeles, prompting the latter to retire from professional fighting at the age of 40. Although Perry secured a quick victory, he sustained a severe cut that may sideline him for up to 60 days.
The California State Athletic Commission indicated that Perry would not be able to return until the laceration on his left cheek is cleared by a doctor. Alves, who recently lost his mother, confirmed that this would be his final bout, expressing his contentment with his decision to retire.
His career includes a 23-15 professional MMA record, with 15 wins and 12 losses in the UFC. He notably faced Georges St-Pierre in a championship bout at UFC 100.
Reflecting on his decision, Alves mentioned that he was already retired but chose to fight once more. Despite the difficulties he faced, especially with the recent loss of his mother, he expressed no regrets about his decision.
He acknowledged the challenges of retiring at the top level but expressed satisfaction with the person he has become. Alves thanked everyone who supported him and stated that he is looking forward to his new role as a coach.
He shared that he tried to give it his all in his final fight but acknowledged that it did not go as planned.
