Liverpool’s £400m Stadium and ‘Extra Spectacular’ Kop Plans Doomed from Start – Daily Star

Liverpool’s stadium capacity is set to surpass the 60k mark, with ongoing work to be completed. The project led by Fenway Sports Group has seen the construction of the Main Stand at a cost of £110m. Under previous ownership, the club could have been playing in a significantly different home.

Former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett had plans for a £400 million stadium, with a particularly remarkable Kop. However, this ambitious project faced setbacks due to financial constraints. The original plans for a 60,000-seat stadium at the Stanley Park site were put on hold due to lack of funds.

Despite subsequent minor site preparation, the project faced challenges as costs soared. The subsequent financial troubles and internal disputes saw the venture abandoned, with an estimated cost to Liverpool of £50m. FSG eventually decided to focus on redeveloping Anfield instead of pursuing the new stadium, with ongoing work nearing completion.

Despite the changes in plans, the club and its ownership have remained committed to enhancing the stadium’s facilities.
