Restless supervolcano could consume an entire US state as eruption fears loom – Daily Star

The supervolcano at Mammoth Lakes, California is one of the world’s 20 known supervolcanoes and has a classification of VEI 8 on the eruption scale due to its enormity. This area is significant as it was the site of the second largest explosive volcanic eruption in North America. Between 1970 and 1980, the region experienced a high number of earthquakes, and the floor saw a rise believed to be caused by magma growth.

This led to concern among scientists studying the area. During an investigation by the Science Channel, Geophysicist Jared Peacock used InSAR (remote sensing technology) and found a “resurgent dome” near Mammoth Lakes. However, tests revealed that the scattered nature of the liquid under the dome does not currently pose a major concern.

Mr. Peacock further stated that conclusive evidence shows there is no giant magma chamber below the volcano, providing some reassurance about the current state of the supervolcano.
