Sheffield United in Premier League latest club to receive points deduction

The punishment relates to the 2022/23 season when the Blades were slapped with a transfer embargo due to the non-payment of transfer funds. The EFL confirmed on Thursday (April 11) that an independent disciplinary commission has decided that the Premier League strugglers will be deducted two points at the start of the next season when they’re most likely going to be competing in the Championship, with a further two points suspended.

The statement read: “An independent Disciplinary Commission (IDC) has determined that Sheffield United Football Club are to be deducted two points at the start of the next season the Club is in the EFL’s jurisdiction, with a further two points suspended until the end of that same season. “The sanction relates to the 2022/23 season, when the Club defaulted on a number of payments to other Clubs.

These defaults cumulatively were in excess of 550 days. The Club has agreed to pay the EFL’s costs in the sum of £310,455.”

Chris Wilder’s side have sat bottom of the Premier League since December and are nine points adrift from safety with seven games remaining. While a swift relegation back to the Championship isn’t confirmed yet, the Blades will need to pull off a miraculous escape to retain their top-flight status.

They take on Brentford and Burnley in their next two games and will need to clinch six points for any chance of survival. £22 a monthSky
